– Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon targets 2021 to meet all requirements for induction as
member in Abbott World Marathon Majors series of events
– New evening start, three-day format from 29 November – 1 December caters to both competitive and
casual runners
SINGAPORE – At a launch event today, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) announced
that the 2019 edition of the race will upgrade the athlete experience with a new 6:00pm evening flag off on
Saturday 30 November for the Marathon, Half Marathon and Ekiden distances while shifting to a three-day
event format. The Kids Dash will take place on Friday 29 November while the 5K and 10k races will take
place on Sunday 1 December providing a distance for everyone. These steps were taken to further the
appeal of the race for participants and spectators and is a significant step towards the goal of SCSM being
inducted into the illustrious Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM), a series of the largest and most
renowned marathons in the world. If successful, SCSM would become the seventh marathon within
AbbottWMM joining the BMW Berlin Marathon, Boston Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon,
Virgin Money London Marathon, TCS New York City Marathon, and the Tokyo Marathon.
“Since announcing the bid to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2017, we’ve been working closely
with our respective partners to improve the Singapore race experience for both runners and spectators. We
have consulted Sport Singapore and the relevant government agencies and they have shared their support
for the night race.” said Geoff Meyer, Managing Director for The IRONMAN Group in Asia. “Enhancements
are happening every year to build up the event festivities as well as programs and initiatives that promote
the running culture and community engagement in Singapore. We are now closer than ever to the required
criteria and strongly believe that the change in flag-off time, and a number of other improvements over the
next two editions will see more marathoners and community support than ever as we position ourselves to
qualify in 2021.”
The SCSM has been recognised as a Gold Label event by the International Association of Athletics
Federations (IAAF) since 2012 for its world-class excellence in global sporting significance, organisational
quality, athletes’ safety and compliance with the IAAF Rules and Regulations. Singapore has shown it is
an ideal year-round run destination to the international running community and will see the best elite and
elite wheelchair division in event history. Since the inaugural race in 1982, the Standard Chartered
Singapore Marathon has grown to a globally significant event that attracts approximately 50,000 runners
each year across all race categories from more than 125 countries, regions and territories.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth & Transport, Mr Baey Yam Keng, who
was the Guest-of-Honour at the launch event, said, “The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon has
been a longstanding highlight on the regional sports calendar, attracting elite marathoners and running
enthusiasts from Singapore and around the world annually. It is heartening that the organisers are
continually improving the Singapore Marathon experience so that it can be among the best in the world.
With the flag-offs on Saturday evening this year, I anticipate many more Singaporeans coming out to cheer
on the runners and join in the excitement. I hope to see the Singapore Marathon join the ranks of the World
Marathon Majors in 2021!”
2019 To Bring Significant Improvements to Athlete and Spectator Experience
The IRONMAN Group in Singapore is working closely with the local authorities to plan a spectator-friendly
route through Singapore’s most iconic streets and modern architecture to give fans and runners a different
perspective and intimate view of the city. From cultural and historical diversity to lush greenery and a
buzzing metropolis that includes modern marvels such as the Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and
The Singapore Flyer, locals and run-cation visitors will be treated to a visual tour of the city-state.
For the first time, the Marathon, Half Marathon and Ekiden distances will flag off in the evening of Saturday,
30 November, a key evolution after ongoing consultation with the Abbott World Marathon Majors team and
government stakeholders, which began in 2017. This will present a host of benefits for both competitive
and casual runners. Most notably, cooler temperatures will lead to a better experience and performances
for runners while creating an exciting race environment that takes full advantage of Singapore’s bright lights
and night life.
Tim Hadzima, Executive Director of the Abbott World Marathon Majors said, “Today’s announcement is
another step forward for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in their long-term aspiration of
becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major. The changes for this year’s marathon are just a few parts of
stringent criteria that we assess each year, as there are many stages of this process still to be met. We are
excited to see how the runners react to the improvements that they will experience this year.”
To encourage added participation and support from the public, organisers are introducing all new spectator
zones, which will feature a myriad of lifestyle and entertainment offerings. This will add to the more than 26
on-route entertainment points to create a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere for both runners and supporters.
“With SCSM, we have enjoyed a great run over the past 18 years. Making the World Marathon Major pitch
this year is very meaningful for us at Standard Chartered as 2019 marks our 160th anniversary in
Singapore. With the support of IRONMAN Asia, Sport Singapore and our partners, I am confident that we
can make SCSM truly a world-class event and showcase the best of Singapore to our friends and
supporters from around the world,” said Mr. Patrick Lee, CEO of Standard Chartered Singapore.
The 3-day event will kick off with the Kids Dash on Friday evening at 7:00pm while the 5km and 10km
categories will flag off on Sunday morning at 8.30am and 6.30am respectively.
To begin preparing for this year’s race, runners can now participate in training programmes such as the
Women’s Squad, run with pacers or get involved in SCSM’s virtual running community on Strava, which
will help runners put their best foot forward as they prepare for the race.

SINGAPORE (December 9, 2018) – The 17th edition of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) raised the bar for endurance races in the region, with a world class weekend of racing. Over two days, tens of thousands of athletes from 127 different countries, regions and territories took in the stunning sights and sounds of an all-new course which spanned the lush greens and striking skyscrapers of the world-renowned garden city.
Five new champions and one back-to-back winner were crowned across the strongest-ever elite, local and elite wheelchair categories.
In their SCSM debut, 24-year-old Joshua Kipkorir (KEN) and 38-year-old Priscah Cherono (KEN) came out victors in the men’s and women’s elite categories, respectively. Their wins began a run of Kenyans who finished one, two and three, securing the podium spots for the elite men’s and women’s marathon categories.
In the men’s race, Kipkorir gradually broke away from the pack after the halfway mark and crossed the finish line in a blazing time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds, the second fastest time in the race’s history. SCSM 2016 champion Felix Kirwa (KEN) took second finishing a minute behind while Andrew Kimtai (KEN) took third.
After setting the pace for the majority of the women’s race, Cherono made a winning move as she broke away at the 40km mark to finish ahead of compatriots Stella Barsosio (KEN) and Jane Jelagat (KEN). The 38-year-old defeated her competition with a time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 12 seconds – the second-fastest ever timing for the women’s elite category at SCSM.
Speaking on the win, Cherono said, “Singapore is a good place, I’m lucky to be here. Yesterday was so hot, but today the conditions were good. I am so happy I won the race. I came to this race and I prepared myself, so I’m dreaming.”
The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon also hosted its inaugural elite Wheelchair Marathon category which brought a scintillating race to the finish. Kota Hokonuie (JPN) and 2016 Paralympic champion Zou Lihong (CHN) took home the top prizes for the men’s and women’s category with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 36 seconds and 1 hour 46 minutes and 48 seconds, respectively. Rounding out the men’s podium was Sho Watanabe (Japan) in second and Joshua George (USA) in third. The women’s elite wheelchair podium finished with two Australians, Madison De Rozario and Eliza Ault-Connel taking second and third, respectively.
Enjoying the technically challenging route, women’s wheelchair winner Zou expressed a desire to return to SCSM. “I really enjoyed the course, the city is very beautiful, and I really hope to return with my teammates to participate in the race next year.”
Winning the title of Singapore’s National Champions at SCSM 2018 were Soh Rui Yong and Lim Baoying. The duo fended off fierce competition from over 20 Team Singapore runners, which included former women’s champion Rachel See, and veterans Mohamed Iskandar and Giebert Foo on the men’s side. Soh defended his title with a winning time of 2 hours 41 minutes and 49 seconds, while Lim shocked with an impressive 3 hours 16 minutes and 36 seconds. A sports doctor and member of the SCSM 300km Club, Lim was overcome with emotion upon crossing the finish line.
Celebrating his victory, Soh said, “It’s an honour to be this year’s National Champion, having competed against such a tough field. The race was a complete joy to run from start to finish, the organisation was smooth and the setup bodes well for future editions. The new two-day format seems to be well-received by the runners, and I hope that the local running scene continues to grow from strength to strength and join the competition.”
At the close of events, Patrick Lee, CEO, Standard Chartered Bank Singapore took the time to celebrate the weekend’s festivities. “Congratulations to all our runners! Every one of them carries his or her personal story of courage, determination and passion. It is a privilege to be part of an event that is of such scale, quality and inclusiveness. For a bank who has been in Singapore for almost 160 years, we are delighted to play a part in strengthening our social fabric.”
Southeast Asia’s only IAAF gold-labelled race flagged off both the marathon and half-marathon races at 4:30 a.m. local time. The new route gave participants an unparalleled experience traveling through the sights and sounds of the all-new iconic city route spanning the eastern and western coasts of Singapore.
On Saturday, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2018 kicked off the race weekend with the Kids Dash at Universal Studios Singapore and the re-introduction of the 5km category supported by the National Steps Challenge. Together with the 10km race, the three events brought together thousands of participants, from all ages to pursue their passion for running.
Spectators were treated to live entertainment, and the first SCSM Foodtastic Village added a touch of vibrancy along Marina Bay. On route, spectators enjoyed 30 entertainment points keeping them pumped and driven throughout the race.
“This year, we’ve made several improvements, to deliver the best edition of SCSM yet. We have received positive feedback from participants about the new route and features like ice chips, additional road closures, hydration stations, and the variety of entertainment points,” said Geoff Meyer, Executive Race Director for Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon and Managing Director of IRONMAN Asia. “The team has already begun building on learnings from this year to enhance the race experience even further as we continue to work towards one of the world’s greatest races.”

Singapore’s biggest annual road race, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) this year will give participants and the community-at-large a comfortable race that is power-packed with entertainment.
Organisers of the popular home-grown event and regions’ only IAAF Gold Label race aims to create memories for everyone when they unveiled exciting new routes for all categories in a new two-day race format on 8th and 9th December 2018.
Recognizing that SCSM has grown to become an integral part of the nation’s sporting calendar, Mr Lim Teck Yin, CEO of Sport Singapore believes that the running enthusiasts can look forward to ending the year on a high note.
He said, “The SCSM is not just a running spectacle but also an event for people to come together to enjoy their active lifestyle and celebrate the festive season in a fun and healthy way. When an event brings thousands together every year, it shows what it means to people. Therefore, we always challenge ourselves to raise the level of organization for our runners and the community-at-large. SCSM continues to strive to create memorable and happy moments for everyone. I appreciate the unstinting efforts by the IRONMAN Asia, partner agencies, and other stakeholders, in designing and supporting another wonderful SCSM that all of us can be proud of.”
With close to 40,000 registered participants and still counting, organisers are committed to creating an event which showcases the best of Singapore to the world. “All successful sporting events put their participants first, while delivering on world-class standards. All great events share yet another common feature – everyone who takes part actually has fun! This unique proposition has allowed us to sell out our marathon distance first while continuing to engage new runners, families and children. SCSM is the leading race in the region, and we’re confident that our new route, enhanced entertainment and runners’ perks will edge us closer to our goal of joining the elite group of World Marathon Majors,” said Mr Geoff Meyer, Managing Director IRONMAN Asia.
New Format; New Route; New Experience
The new two-day event sees the shorter distances (Kids Dash, National Step Challenge 5km and 10km) held on 8th December, while the Half Marathon and Marathon categories will take place on 9th December. For the first time in the event’s history, runners participating in all four competitive categories will begin from the same start point at the Pit Building and will end at The Float at Marina Bay.
The flag-off will be beneath the iconic Singapore Flyer where the weekend’s race village will offer quality programming for runners and supporters alike. The wider space, which is accessible exclusively to race participants will offer easier pen access and the opportunity for runners to set their own pace from the very beginning. Runners will get to enjoy a more comfortable race experience with full road closures spanning 95% of the route. All the routes have been designed after taking into account both the runners and the surrounding communities’ input.
Participants of the National Steps Challenge 5km and 10km categories are flagging off together in the morning of 8th December (Saturday), running the same route towards the Kallang Basin, where participants in the National Steps Challenge 5km race will loop back to run past the Esplanade, while 10km participants proceed towards the National Stadium. Runners from both categories will end their race at The Float at Marina Bay.
Singapore’s biggest children’s race will also flag off on Saturday morning at the Universal Studios Singapore in Resorts World Sentosa, with an all-new route that allows parents to run and have fun with their young ones. Each parent-and-child duo can enjoy awesome views as they whizz past seven exciting zones, from the fairytale wonderland of Far Far Away featuring Shrek and Princess Fiona’s castle to the lush jungles of Lost World where dinosaurs roam.
Participants keen to enjoy the thrilling rides and world-class entertainment at Universal Studios Singapore after the run can select a special bundle which includes a Kids Dash run package, theme park admission as well as dining and shopping vouchers.
On 9th December (Sunday), Half Marathon and Marathon runners will race past the Padang where the National Gallery Singapore is located, downtown in the direction of the Central Business District and round back towards the Marina Bay Golf course. Towards the end, runners will enjoy the unique view of the city as they race past the Singapore Flyer towards the finish line amidst the spectacular Marina Bay cityscape.
The enhanced routes this year aim to provide a memorable and quality experience for runners while ensuring minimal inconvenience to the wider public. Communities affected by the road closures are engaged early. Adequate signs and notices will be put up in advance to inform the public of impending road closures so that they can make plans to use alternative travel routes. Routes to emergency/essential services such as hospitals shall remain accessible throughout the duration of the event. “A lot of planning and effort have gone into making SCSM 2018 a truly exhilarating experience for everyone. We have worked closely with the relevant authorities to reach out to runners and stakeholders, and will continue to do so as the success of SCSM relies on strong partnerships and support from communities to lead an active lifestyle together.” said Mr Meyer.
Comfort, Convenience & Fun
This year, runners can expect an improved bag deposit system as organisers adopt best practices from World Marathon Major races. Making it easier and more convenient for all runners, the number of bag deposit zones have increased with the same drop-off and pick-up points. Participants will also be provided with clear bags and stickers tagged to their bib numbers at the Race Entry Pack Collection (REPC) at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 5 to 8 December. Information regarding the bag deposit system will be communicated to all runners ahead of race day to ensure awareness of the new processes.
There will also be an addition of up to 15 hydration and cooling zones throughout the Half Marathon and Marathon routes, which will feature new splash and ice chips stations, along with the runners’ favourite – mist tunnels.
Balancing nutritional intake is key to performing during endurance races like SCSM. In the lead up to the event, runners have been given a number of opportunities to learn more about nutritional needs and planning for their race day intake from partners Coached.
Come race week, participants and the public can indulge in meals at the scrumptious Foodtastic Village – an all-new enhanced F&B and entertainment offering which will line Marina Bay Sands from 6 to 9 December. The village will comprise a mix of F&B zones and chill out spaces where runners can indulge in specially curated meals and take in views of the city as they share their race day experience with friends and family.
At the race, an unprecedented 26 entertainment points will be set up to drum-up the race atmosphere. Performances by local bands, street performers, and cheerleaders will amp up energy levels and spur on runners.
Standard Chartered Cardholders will enjoy 15% off registration fee across all categories.
